When Real Audio/Video first came out, it required
an audio/video server to be installed on the web server. This was because
Real Audio/Video wanted to charge for each "stream'" or visitor.
But soon people started writing competitive audio/video streaming
technology that didn't require a special server. So, to compete, Real
Audio/Video now does not require a server, and you can even use their free
tools to create streaming audio over the Internet.

Using Real Audio/Video on your site:
Each audio clip requires two
files: a metafile with extension .ram, and the digital audio clip
itself, with extension .ra.
The .ram file holds one or more
lines of ASCII text, each of which references the .ra file to be
played when the .ram file is accessed by the browser. Entries in
.ram files have the form:
http://yourdomain.com/file.ra
Warning: .ram
files must be uploaded in ASCII mode while .ra files must be uploaded in
BINARY mode.
You may then access these files via a web browser
at:
http://www.yourdomain.com/file.ram
If you are using FrontPage and
have the extensions installed you'll need to use the multimedia tools
provided with the software. Otherwise from the Control Panel choose the Mime
Types icon.
Choose the directory you would
like to work with and press Load.
Follow the onscreen directions to
add new file types, here are some examples:
|
audio/x-pn-realaudio |
